December Second Harvest Foodbank

The Second Harvest Foodbank’s mobile food pantry will come to 212 Main Street in Gays Mills on Wednesday, December 23rd.  Registration will start at 1:30 p.m. Food distribution will be from 2 to 3 p.m. The mobile food pantry provides food to households that self-identify as needing food assistance.  Each month different foods are distributed.  Patrons generally will receive fifty to seventy pounds of diverse food products including frozen meat, breads, canned goods, some fresh produce, and staples. Patrons do not need to meet income guidelines.  They must provide the check-in volunteer with the number of people (including children and senior citizens) in the household and the name of their post office.  They must initial a registration sheet indicating they need food assistance.

First time patrons will be asked how they learned about the mobile food pantry.  People should bring sturdy bags, boxes, or baskets to hold the food they receive. Volunteers will assist by carrying food to vehicles as needed.  In November, the Second Harvest mobile food pantry in Gays Mills provided food to 169 households.  A total of 426 people including 82 children and 116 seniors benefited from the food.  Recipients came from eighteen communities in six counties.

Volunteers are needed to assist with unloading the truck, setting up the distribution area, handing out food, and cleaning up after the mobile pantry is concluded.  If you want to volunteer, please arrive at the Community Building between 1:00 and 1:30 pm on mobile pantry dates.  Second Harvest policy does not allow volunteers to receive a food distribution.
