On Thursday, October 10, the Dream Flight USA STEM Shuttle visited our middle school. The shuttle is a 45 foot long motor coach, outfitted to be a mobile classroom, and is a “field trip that visits schools”. Its exterior is a brilliant display of a space shuttle and outer space objects. Now in its 15th year of shuttle missions in Wisconsin and adjacent states, the shuttle continues to motivate upper elementary and middle school students to learn.
As striking as its exterior may be, it’s what goes on inside the STEM Shuttle that is most important. STEM stands for Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics, and the STEM Shuttle missions to schools are a learning opportunity, with students challenged to a variety of hands-on work stations. Our middle school students rotated through in five groups, spending close to an hour challenged by a series of hands-on activities on board the shuttle. The education process was aided by two veteran on board teachers, and is designed to motivate students to learn. In fact, the mission of the Dream Flight USA Foundation, located in Wausau, WI, is to “Motivate students to learn.” You can learn more about the Shuttle at their website: https://www.stemshuttle.com/
Our students were excited to take part in this activity, and we would like to thank the shuttle crew, and all those who helped make this opportunity available to our school! We would especially like to thank Delta Dental, who funded the shuttle visit.
