Last spring, the school was approached by the Americorp organization, about a reading program called Reading Corps, that would provide a part time reading tutor for our elementary students for the 2022-23 school year. The program is paid through state and federal dollars, with no cost to the school. In March, the School Board approved our participation in the program.
Reading Corps advertised the position over the summer, and the school assisted in recruiting the tutor. Renae Irvin was hired to be the Reading Corp tutor for our school. Reading Corps provided training for Renae to deliver the critical literacy skills elementary students need. Tutors deliver research-based interventions to kindergarten through third grade students in pairs or one-on-one, targeting phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency. These evidence-based interventions are delivered in daily 20-minute sessions, and in September Renae started working with our students.
Our school provides onsite oversight, a workspace, and office materials for the program. The school also provides a staff member as the Reading Corps Internal Coach (Reading Specialist Kelsey Kleven) to provide onsite support and guidance for our Reading Corps program. We are excited to host the program at our school this year, providing additional reading support for our elementary students!
